The Value of Text Messaging finally hits me
Last night was Game 5 of the Edmonton Oilers - Anaheim Mighty Ducks Conference Series Final. I have watched all of the playoff games this year except when there have been circumstances that have not allowed me to do so. For instance, while in Florida, I was unable to watch the games because they were not being televised.
Saturday night, I had to attend my sister's grad.
It meant that I couldn't watch the game. It was really distressing because the Oilers had won the first three games of the series. Then Anaheim destroyed them in a 6-3 romp on Thursday. They had to face a bit of adversity in the series because they were hit with a flu bug that must have affected about a third of their team. I was nervous to see how they were doing. I wanted to be there for my team.
Lucky for me, I had 3 fellow Oilers fans who were able to help me through it. They all agreed to text message me. Jackie, Nick, and Wade each provided me with different information about the game. It allowed me to be able to pretend I watching the game. Getting text messages was almost tenser than watching the actual game because I couldn't see what was going on. It was kinda scary. Nevertheless, my sweaty palms and heart palpatations were worth it because the Oilers did succeed.
They are playing in their first stanley cup final since 1990, when I was 5.
Saturday night proved to me that text messaging using cell phones was a valuable practice. I always thought it was a way to become almost too connected. It was a way to be too close to people that you don't always want to be close to.
I was proven wrong. It was almost like instant messenger on the telephone. I wasn't as quick as I would be on messeger, but I was able to talk to people privately kilometres away without disturbing others and to do it without yelling.
