A Possible 2nd round match-up
Tomorrow could go down as one of the biggest days in hockey in Alberta. Both the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames are playing a game 6 in the first round of the playoffs. Both have a 3-2 lead over their opponents respectively.
If both were to win, it would be the first time that the teams have played each other in the playoffs I believe since 1991. That's 15 years!!!! It would completely change how hockey playoffs for Albertan teams. Edmonton is playing Detroit and I imagine that the flight takes four hours to get there. Calgary is playing Anaheim and I'm sure that the flight is somewhere near 3-4 hours. If they were to play each other, it would mean that they would only have to fly about 30 minutes in the air to get to the other city. It would be like playing in the Eastern Conference...rounds with much less travelling time.
Regardless of making it easier on the players, the series would be simply amazing. It would be an ALL ALBERTAN round. The crowds in Edmonton and Calgary are probably the two loudest arenas in the entire NHL. To have a series where both of the teams play each other would be unheard of. Sadly, since there isn't a train that connects Calgary to Edmonton (yet....anyway) we wouldn't be able to have a subway series. Maybe it would be called a Prairie Series.
Of course, all of this is still theoretical. The Oilers still need to beat the Detroit Red Wings, the number one team in the NHL, at Rexall Place, an arena they have struggled in the entire year. Calgary needs to play another solid game against Anaheim, a team in which they have played inconsistently hockey.
I think both of these teams will be able to satisfy my fantasy.
Here's to hoping!
