CDA Formal

Wow
Saturday night featured a great night for all of the DDS class of 2009. Saturday, November 26th was the CDA formal. This is an evening where the Canadian Dental Association welcomes the first year dentistry students into the community of dentists. It wasn't just first years who showed up but many people from all four years. There, they sponsor our dinner. To me, it was magnificent comprising of all my favorite starches and meats. However, it appears that some people in our class came down with some sort of nasty bug. After completing Infection, Inflammation and Immunity I must say that it was likely Campylobacter or Salmonella. I hope that people have rehydrated themselves and are now doing okay.
At any rate, there were tons of door prizes. I was lucky enough to win a $100 Best Buy gift certificate. It seemed like there were so many door prizes that it was almost like if you didn't win one you were in the minority.
As well, the ADA, or Alberta Dental Association, is celebrating its 100th year of existence. Because of that and the fact that it has started up a fund for research it donated $1000 to each first year student. I had heard rumours that this was going to be done but to actually have it come true is even better!
As well, the Department of Dentistry presented each of us with a pin. I'm not sure how long this has been going on but it's probably a long going tradition likely further than over 40 years. THis isn't a cheap pin either. It's from Birks which means that I got to open my very first Birks box. (talking to my dad it seems that that was a VERY big thing to do back in the day...for girls I'm sure it still is)
Possibly the best part of the evening was having Dr. Gibb being honoured for his service spanning over 30 years at the faculty. He made a great speech reminding all the students that dentistry will provide you with free time and money and that you should use that time/money to better your community in any way that you see fit. I believe this too but the way he said it, coming from a man who practices this, was very powerful.
Finally there was a dance where I showed off my Cadillac Ranch and a bit of Bungrah (sorry if I spelled it wrong).
All in all a great evening that far and away beat Health is Wealth to the ground.
