Wax-up results: Part II

I got my second wax-up back and I got 84% on it. That's a 9% improvement and this tooth is also worth more than the first one. I'm very happy.

That is all for now.

There is some wisdom in Calgary's approach to grades.... Firstly, no marks are ever published. Each student receives their own raw score and its relation to the MPL, not to the class average. What's an MPL? For every exam and assignment there is an MPL (minimal pass level) -- as long as you've exceeded that mark, you pass. There is no system of honors or distinction. Why, you may ask? They want to eliminate the spirit of competition that exists in many medical school and rather foster collegiality and cooperation, skills that colleagues need in these professions. It emphasizes that grades are not the be-all and end-all of medicine; knowledge is only one component of a good physician and does not guarantee competency or quality. There also needs to be a dedication to perserving balance in the lives of medical professionals. By eliminating the strive for ever-higher grades, one is able to reflect and realize that there IS time and necessity for other committments in life.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts, David, given that you are studying in a completely different system.

On second thought and reading, let me clarify that first post....

In no way do I want to imply that you are being competitive in your approach, David. I am thrilled to hear of your success, just as I knew you would do!!! My comment was meant to be one of a general nature, reflective on different methods of education and learning. (It was the only intelligent thought-provoking thing I could think of to comment on...!)

Dental anatomy sounds like a grueling class! After all, no one wants a tooth that looks like a chicklet! I totally understand why it's necessary to develop the best technical skills possible.

Go get 'em, Tiger! I would totally trust you with my pearly whites!
