Reflections after 4 weeks

Look how the time flies!

It's been 4 weeks of actual classroom learning already. I can't believe that school has been going so fast even when I'm there for over 8 hours a day. It's been awhile since I've enjoyed school this much. (For those who don't know what I'm referring to just know that I loved IB). That's what makes these 8 hour days tolerable.

The learning curve is fast. I've learned so much dental anatomy, general sciences, research, waxing already I feel like what I had to learn for undergrad was insignificant and to a certain degree pointless.

I've met great people in both the medicine and dental classes. For the dent classes it's like being in jr. high because you are with the same 32 people which allows you to get to know them a lot better. We actually do stuff as opposed to just having school friends. As well, I actually feel like I'm a part of the university whereas before I just felt like I went to the university. That's a big step for me because I honestly hated undergrad.

However, it's not all sugar, gumdrops and kittens. My PCC class is great because we learn how to interact with patients and learn the legal aspects of consent, disclosure and capacity. This is VERY important stuff to learn. My enjoyment of that class is marred by MED students IN PARTICULAR (not dent) who need to pick apart and over analyze every single theoretical issue that has been brought up. I see it as mostly common sense and I wonder if these people are just trying to be difficult or if they have never worked jobs in the service industry. Myself I know that some issues are going to be complex and divisive with cultural, personal, gender and religious implications but for the time being just gain an appreciation of what the law has to offer. In time and experience these issues will become easier and easier to deal with. If you do your job properly with honesty and integrity you are less likely going to be sued.

The only other thing that bugs me is PBL where I believe that it shouldn't take me as long to find the info for something so insignificant. Regardless though I guess, it's an easy 25%.

Wax can be your friend as long as you realize that you should not be envious of other people's teeth, nor should you be a glutton of wax either. Slowly, but surely you will be able to build a tooth up properly. You just gotta believe.

With my enthusiasm I say bring on the exam and another great month in October!
